Cave Diving Courses

PADI / TDI Sidemount Kurs

Why Sidemount?

You don’t necessarily have to carry your scuba tank on your back to explore the underwater world. Many divers have found that it is more comfortable for them to carry their scuba tank(s) sideways. The idea of sidemount diving actually comes from England, when cave explorers wanted to pass through narrow passages in mountain springs. These are usually wide by topography, but not very high. Gradually, this has evolved into today’s sidemount.

In addition to increased streamlining and less energy for desired propulsion, the whole device is also easier on the back. Another point is the independence of two different breathing gas reserves. A “diver without air” scenario can therefore be virtually ruled out.

Course content and duration

As part of the many benefits of diving with the sidemount configuration, you will learn during dives in “confined open water” (i.e. in a swimming pool or in a protected area in the open water) and during further of the 4 open water dives:

  • Properly assemble and configure dive equipment for sidemount diving.
  • Tuning your weight system and new dive gear to find the perfect balance underwater.
  • When carrying two tanks, switching from one second stage of your regulator to the other second stage to manage your breathing gas supply.
  • Better and safer gas calculations
  • Gas dispensing exercises
  • Valve exercises
  • Various swimming techniques such as frog kicks or the backward swim.
  • Responding correctly to potential problems when sidemount diving and also helping your dive buddy properly.
